Vidraru Dam Upgrade Project: Complex On-Site Logistics in a Challenging Mountain Environment

Hydropower infrastructure projects are among the most demanding undertakings in the industrial sector. They require a perfect alignment of engineering expertise, specialized equipment, and calculated execution—especially when the site is a historic engineering marvel built into a steep mountain face.
For the landmark Vidraru Dam upgrade project, Eastship was employed by Electromontaj to handle the high-stakes on-site offloading, maneuvering, and precision foundation placement of most of the oversized components. This included handling 7 massive, oversized Heavy Value Transformers (HVTs) and their associated heavy equipment directly on-site.
Here is a look behind the scenes at how our specialized engineering and site crews overcame extreme geographical challenges to deliver success.
The Challenge: A 52° Incline and Strict Space Constraints
The Vidraru Dam is an iconic structure, but its rugged, mountainous location introduces severe logistical bottlenecks. Handling heavy-lift industrial components of this magnitude on-site means operating with tight clearance limits, restricted maneuvering room, and a notoriously steep approach leading directly to the dam entrance.
Standard equipment simply cannot maintain stability or handle heavy loads safely when dealing with a severe mountain grade. To move the oversized components through this bottleneck safely, the project demanded a completely custom, non-traditional engineering layout to navigate the existing rail system built at a sharp 52° angle incline at the entrance of the Dam.

The Solution: Custom-Built Trolley and Pulling Systems
When standard methods fall short, Eastship designs and builds custom solutions adapted to exact site specifications. To master the unique infrastructure at Vidraru, our in-house engineering team developed a specialized mechanical setup to operate on the existing layout:
Tailor-Made Trolley Engineering: Our crew custom-built a specialized, heavy-duty transport trolley from scratch, specifically engineered to interface with the rail system.
Custom Pulling System Layout: We designed and deployed a custom pulling and jacking setup to safely load two major oversized components up the 52° incline. This system allowed our team to slowly, predictably, and safely control the load on the steep rail tracks.

Conclusion
The Vidraru Dam upgrade project demonstrates the increasing complexity of logistics operations associated with critical energy infrastructure modernization. In environments where standard transport methods are insufficient, successful execution depends on detailed engineering preparation, specialized hydraulic equipment, and experienced operational teams capable of adapting to restrictive site conditions.
By combining heavy transport capabilities with engineered offloading and placement solutions, Eastship contributed to the handling and positioning of key oversized components required for the continued modernization of one of Romania’s most important hydropower facilities.
Participating in the modernization of the Vidraru Dam represents an important milestone for Eastship and reflects the company’s continued involvement in complex infrastructure and energy projects requiring customized heavy logistics solutions.
