Oversize road transport, barge operations and port logistics | Bucharest – Constanța, Romania

Moving a 307-tonne industrial vessel measuring 59.4 metres in length, 4.8 metres in width and 4.8 metres in height required an integrated logistics solution combining transport engineering, specialised road transport and coordinated waterborne operations. For the Suzano Cerrado project in Brazil, Eastship Projects & Logistics, a Romania-based provider of oversize transport, barge operations and project logistic managed the Romanian logistics scope, from route surveys and transport planning to RO/RO loading at Oltenița, barge chartering and port operations in Constanța, where the cargo was transferred for onward maritime shipment.

Oversize Road Transport and Engineering

The operation began with the planning and coordination required to move an exceptionally long industrial vessel from Bucharest to Oltenița. The cargo's dimensions called for a detailed route survey, transport planning and coordination of the necessary permits, alongside the assessment of road infrastructure constraints and civil works requirements.

Eastship coordinated the road transport and the associated engineering activities, including cargo loading calculations and the preparation of the technical documentation required for the operation. This planning established the conditions for the subsequent transfer from road to barge.

RO/RO Loading at Oltenița

A key stage of the operation was the roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) loading at Oltenița, where the industrial vessel was transferred from road transport onto a barge.

To facilitate this transfer, Eastship constructed a dedicated access ramp and coordinated the loading operation. The ramp provided the required interface between the shore and the barge, enabling the cargo to be moved aboard using the RO/RO method rather than conventional crane lifting.

Eastship also prepared the cargo loading plan and lashing plan, addressing the positioning and securing requirements associated with a 307-tonne load. Combined with barge chartering and coordination with the operators involved, these activities formed the technical and operational basis for the transfer.

Barge Transport from Oltenița to Constanța

Following the RO/RO loading operation, the barge transported the cargo from Oltenița to Constanța. Eastship coordinated the barge chartering and the relevant operational arrangements, integrating the inland waterway leg into the wider logistics chain.

This stage connected the road transport operation with the port facilities in Constanța, where the cargo was prepared for transfer to the vessel designated for onward maritime shipment.

Port Operations in Constanța

Upon arrival in Constanța, Eastship coordinated the port-side operations associated with the cargo's onward movement. This stage included the arrangements required for the transfer from the barge to the vessel designated for maritime transport.

The port operation completed the Romanian logistics scope, connecting the specialised road transport, RO/RO loading and inland barge movement with the onward shipment of the cargo towards Brazil.

Integrated Project Logistics

For the Suzano Cerrado project in Brazil, Eastship Projects & Logistics coordinated the movement of a 307t industrial vessel from Bucharest to Oltenița, managed specialized oversize road transport, built a dedicated RO/RO ramp for loading at port, prepared the loading and lashing plans, chartered the barge, and oversaw the port operations in Constanța before onward maritime shipping. A technically demanding operation integrating engineering, transport, and port logistics for a single 307t vessel.
